How I got here
I knew when I was 10 years old that I wanted to be a writer. As an adult, a degree in Creative Writing didn't lead directly to writing work, but it was a stepping stone.
The next step was my becoming an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher. I taught at a language school for international adult students for over 15 years. Teaching taught me how to convey information more clearly. Teaching English gave me an excellent understanding of the structure of the English language.
That experience also gave me the foundational skills to create good educational materials. I enjoyed creating them as much as I enjoyed teaching.
When I wasn't teaching, I was involved with community groups. I became the newsletter editor for one group. A course on writing and publishing newsletters gave me the skills to write, edit, and design better newsletters.
Then came websites. In the late 1990s, another group I was involved with needed a website to share information. I learned the basics of web content writing and website development to create a site for that group. It wasn't a great site, but it was a useful learning experience. It left me wanting to know more about writing web content, search engine optimization, and designing good websites.
I've continued to improve my knowledge and skills in these areas through study and experience. In 2005, I left my teaching job to be a full-time writer and editor. Since becoming more interested in the marketing aspect of writing, I've learned more about such things as autoresponder emails and mailing lists. I've applied the design and layout principles I learned from working on newsletters and websites to other work, such as training manuals.
Words and design work together, and I enjoy putting them together in a variety of ways.
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, major in Creative Writing, from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. I followed that with a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate at the same university. Later, I took writing, editing, publishing, and marketing courses at Simon Fraser University, also in Vancouver, Canada.
My formal education was a foundation for everything I've learned from self-study and experience.
A little more about me
In 2007, I moved from Vancouver, Canada, to Kalamazoo, Michigan. I live with my husband, Dennis, and the various dogs and cats that share our home. Together we foster rescue animals, work on websites, and take part in online communities.
My background makes me bilingual in Canadian and American English. I can write for either audiences, and I accept payment in American or Canadian dollars.
